Project; The Alteration of an Existing Residence. The Design and Construction of an Addition to an Existing Residence -2023

Project Overview:

This unique addition to an existing residence consists of two separate single-story buildings connected by an exterior raised patio area and walkway. The principal structure, a dual axis L shaped building, is adjoined to the existing house and is comprised of three distinct bedroom suites on the East/West axis with the balance of the building comprised of a kitchen, dining and living area on the North/South axis.  The large open plan of the main building is also connected on the North end of the North /South axis to a screened-in patio space with kitchenette, grille and open area seating.  An exterior raised patio and walkway connects the principal structure to a one-room pool-house building.

Design:

A home is most complete when it provides both a sense of security and alternatively a sense of expansiveness.

Architecturally both the pool house and the living quarters are set on elevated concrete foundations and buttressed on one side by a tapered poured in place concrete wall that bounds and shelters the two structures.  Both buildings have standing seam metal shed roofs that are supported on the high side by the concrete abutment wall and on the other sides by glass glazed curtain walls. The expansive curtain walls provide both a real and metaphorical counter-balance to the heavy and protective concrete wall.  The large twelve-foot tall curtain walls that surround both buildings provide expansive views into the natural setting of the surrounding woodlands and lake to the West.
